Question:

We all know that green means go, but what is the proper procedure to follow at a green light?

Answer:

Green does mean go but it’s not that simple – it doesn’t mean you can automatically go, it means go when it is SAFE.  Even on a green you need to ensure it is safe to go before proceeding.

Always SCAN the intersection as you approach.  Ensure that cross traffic from both the left and right are either slowing down or stopped.  Also ensure that the traffic coming toward you will be going straight and not rushing to make a left before you go straight through.

You also need to SCAN to make sure all the pedestrians are clear of the crosswalk and there isn’t someone trying to run across at the last second.

Always remember that many people will run a yellow, or even a red light.  The SCAN is very important to prevent major crashes at intersections.  Even if you have the right-of-way on a green light, always make sure the intersection is clear before entering – even on a green light!!

Always remember to SCAN            before entering an intersection, even on a green!!
