Question:

I’m going to ask you a question – when was the last time you checked to see if all the lights on your vehicle are working?

Answer:

Most people wouldn’t be able to answer that question.  It only takes a few minutes and helps keep everyone on the roads safe by making sure they see you and where you intend to go.  Sometimes when someone “cuts you off” without using their indicator, it’s not because they didn’t signal but because their indicator light is burnt out – you don’t want to be caught in that situation.

Once every month, get someone to help you and go through the following steps:

Start your car and have your helper sit in the drivers’ seat while you walk around the car.

Go to the front of the car and ask the person in the car to:

  • Turn on the right indicator
  • Turn on the left indicator
  • Turn on the hazard lights
  • Turn on the head lights
  • Turn on the high beams

Go to the back of the car and ask the person in the car to:

  • Turn on the right indicator
  • Turn on the left indicator
  • Turn on the hazard lights
  • Apply the brakes to check the brake lights
  • Turn on the headlights to check the tail lights
  • Put the car in reverse to check the reverse lights – NEVER stand directly behind the car during this part, always stand behind and to the side of the car in case their foot slips off the brake!!

While you are at it, let’s check a couple more things.  Turn on your windshield wipers to make sure they are working properly and use the windshield washer fluid to make sure it is working as well.  Finally, tap the horn to make sure it is functioning should you need to use it.

Now you know everything is working and you are doing your part in helping keep our roads safe!

Take the time to know everything on your vehicle is working – be that SAFE DRIVER.
