Playground Zones

Question:

When do I slow down for playground zones?

Answer:

It is important to remember when playground zones are in effect – playground speed limits are in effect 365 days a year, from dawn to dusk.

Question:

Where does the playground zone start and end?

Answer:

The playground zone starts at the playground sign, this means that when you see a 30 km/hr speed limit under the sign, you must slow down to 30 km/hr BY THE SIGN.  Don’t start slowing down AT the sign, this is the beginning of the playground zone and you need to have slowed down to 30 km/hr by the beginning of the zone.

Three things you need to be looking for:

  1. Children – always stay alert and look out for children!
  2. Your speed – ensure you do not speed up past the speed limit while travelling through the playground zone, glance at your speedometer occasionally as needed.
  3. The back of the playground sign on the other side of the road – this signals the end of the playground zone and indicates that you can resume your speed to the posted speed limit prior to entering the playground zone.  Use common sense when resuming your speed, if there are many children still around, it is always safest to continue at a reduced speed!!

Question:

What do I do if the playground sign does not have a posted speed limit underneath?

Answer:

If the playground sign does not have a 30 km/hr posted speed limit underneath the sign, be cautious and use common sense.  If there are children in the area, slow down to 30 km/hr as you would in a speed regulated playground zone.  If no children are around, slow down 10 km/hr below the regular speed limit and stay alert and aware of any children in the area.

Always use your common sense and when in doubt, SLOW DOWN!!
