U-Turns

Question:

Can I make a U-turn at an intersection?

Answer:

It depends on the intersection and even on the city you are driving in.

Some intersections have a sign that indicates no U-turns are allowed.  In this case it is very clear that you cannot make a U-turn.

Some intersections will have a sign indicating that U-turns are allowed.  These are becoming more common, especially on busy roads with a concrete median in the middle.  The U-turn is allowed at specific lights to allow you to get into a driveway on the other side of the road since you cannot make a left turn across the median.

If an intersection has a sign indicating that a U-turn is permitted, be sure to read the whole sign before making a U-turn.  Sometimes there are restrictions on when U-turns are permitted, such as the time of day, size of your vehicle, or only a green arrow – not a solid green light.

When you make the U-turn, be sure to do so with extra caution.  First check the intersection for vehicles and pedestrians to ensure it is clear.  Confirm again that oncoming traffic has stopped and that no one is making a right turn into the lanes you will be turning into, they may not know you are intending to make a U-turn and could turn right into your path of travel.

Use your left turn indicator and when the light turns green, slowly move into the intersection.  Shoulder check then turn your wheels all the way to the left, eyes looking where you want to go.  Be sure to make the turn slowly and when you are facing the direction you want to be travelling, straighten out your wheels and get into the proper lane.  Sometimes intersections that allow U-turns have a wider shoulder to allow for front end swing of your vehicle so make sure you are in a travelling lane after you have made your turn.

Always be careful when making U-turns, there is so much activity at intersections which increases the number of potential hazards when using this maneuver.  Also keep in mind that the rules for where and when you can make a U-turn varies from city to city so always be sure to know the rules of the road for the city you are in if you intend to make a U-turn at an intersection that is not specifically marked as allowing U-turns.

Always make sure it is legal and do it safely if you do choose to make a U-turn.
